General Overhead Door FAQs
Standard residential garage door widths include 8’, 9’, 10’, 12’, 15’, 16’, 18’, and 20’. Some door series may vary, and we can also help with specific or custom sizes, so feel free to check with us about what’s available.
An insulated garage door helps protect your home’s thermal barrier by reducing the impact of outside temperatures, lowering the energy needed to heat or cool your home.
While we suggest a certified professional undertake any major repairs, here are some steps you can take to maintain your door:
- Lubricate the track, hinges, and springs periodically (call us for the best method for your specific door).
- Clean and lubricate the weather stripping to keep it pliable.
- Inspect springs, cables, and rollers every six months; contact us if any are worn or broken.
- Repaint painted doors periodically to protect them from the elements.
Some Overhead Door™ steel garage doors can be painted with an exterior water‑based paint in the color of your choice. Since not all models are paintable, contact us, and we’ll guide you based on your specific door.
You can install your own garage door if you have the right skills, tools, and fully follow the installation instructions. However, many DIY installs overlook the complexity and the high tension of the springs, which create serious safety risks. To save time and avoid potential injury, we recommend having one of our qualified installers handle the job safely and efficiently.
In many cases, you can replace just a section of your garage door, depending on the extent of the damage. We’re happy to assess your door and recommend whether a section replacement or a full door replacement is the best option
R‑value measures a garage door’s thermal efficiency—the higher the number, the better the insulation. Overhead Door™ offers insulated doors in a wide range of R‑values to fit your needs, with our Thermacore® doors providing the highest performance at up to 17.5, one of the strongest insulation ratings available.
Our Thermacore® doors are our most energy‑efficient option, offering high R‑Value levels thanks to their insulated design. They’re filled with environmentally safe polyurethane to help reduce heat loss and improve overall energy efficiency in your home.
If your door lacks existing insulation, an Overhead Door™ insulation kit may help, but only for specific door types. Contact us to determine kit compatibility.
The cost of a new garage door system depends on a range of factors. Contact us for an accurate quote on the specific door you’re considering; you may be surprised at how affordable the right option can be.
Yes, a garage door and opener can work in a low‑ceiling space. A residential door needs at least 4½" of headroom using a low‑headroom extension track or a low‑headroom torsion rear track, and a garage door opener typically requires a minimum of 6½" of headroom.
We offer a full range of opener accessories, including remotes and wireless keypads. You’ll need to know whether your opener uses CodeDodger® or is an older model; openers made before 1980 are analog and require a new receiver kit instead of a replacement remote. To get the right remote or kit, just call 780‑451‑0060.
Since 1994, automatic garage door openers have been required to have infrared beams on either side of the door, six inches off the ground. If your opener doesn’t have this safety feature, it should be replaced with a new, properly adjusted opener that meets current safety standards.
The Self‑Diagnostic Safe‑T‑Beam® System helps ensure your opener is installed and operating correctly by using infrared beams that automatically reverse the door when something passes through them. Its red and green LED indicators provide self‑diagnostic codes, making it easy to identify issues and solutions
Our systems include a Six‑Part Safety Package featuring:
- Safe‑T‑Beam® auto‑reversing system with infrared beam + LED diagnostic lights
- Contact reverse, stopping and reversing the door within two seconds of contact
- Timed reverse, stopping and reversing if the door doesn’t close in 30 seconds
- Adjustable electronic force sensitivity control
- Relay switch monitoring, reversing the door if a control relay malfunctions
- STB monitoring, reversing the door if the Safe‑T‑Beam® system malfunctions
Yes, you can program your car’s built‑in transmitter to work with your Overhead Door™ opener. Both systems use the Genie® Intellicode® rolling‑code technology, which provides 4.3 billion code combinations for added security. Many vehicles come with HomeLink®, a factory‑installed visor transmitter that can operate any Genie® opener with Intellicode®, so there’s no need to buy an additional remote.

R-Value is a measure of thermal efficiency, the higher the R-value the greater the insulating properties of the door. Overhead Door Corporation uses a calculated door section R-value for our insulated doors. We have several door styles to meet your insulated door needs for both residential and commercial applications.
- Screw Drive — powerful, fast and quiet. Maximum power for heavy doors.

Overhead Door integrates different technology into its openers and wall consoles. The technologies are known as Series I, Series II and Series III. Series II is backwards compatible to Series I. Series III is not backwards compatible without additional purchased parts. Contact your Overhead Door Distributor for further details.
